What is OCR?

OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is technology that converts text from a photo or scanned file — a receipt, tax invoice, or paper document — into digital data you can type, edit, or search, instead of manually keying every line yourself. The common mix-up is treating OCR and AI-OCR as the same thing. Traditional OCR matches fairly fixed character patterns, so it reads well on documents that follow the same template repeatedly. AI-OCR uses models trained on large amounts of data, so it adapts better to documents that look completely different from each other — like receipts from different shops laid out in their own way. Thai documents bring a specific challenge: vowels, tone marks, and fonts vary far more than in English, so results from either OCR type can still misread or drift off, especially with blurry photos, handwriting, or unusual fonts. Because of this, OCR output — no matter how it was produced — still needs a human review before it's used. It is not a step that finishes on its own. Online shops typically juggle a mix of documents every month — paper receipts from restocking, e-tax invoices from suppliers, delivery notes from warehouses. Keying each one by hand takes time and risks missed documents at month-end.
