Extracting VAT vs adding VAT
Extract VAT when you already know the VAT-inclusive total and want to split out the pre-VAT price and the VAT amount — for example, the amount a customer paid or a marketplace payout. Add VAT when you know the cost or pre-VAT price and want to calculate the VAT-inclusive selling price.
The 7% VAT formula
Extract: VAT = total × 7 ÷ 107, then pre-VAT price = total − VAT. Add: VAT = pre-VAT price × 7%, then total = pre-VAT price + VAT. All figures are rounded to 2 decimal places.
Who this tool is for
Useful for VAT-registered shops that need to separate the goods price from VAT correctly on a tax invoice, or any owner who wants a quick read on how much VAT is hidden inside a payment received. If you're actually filing PP30, verify the numbers with an accountant.
Frequently asked questions
How do you extract VAT from a total?
VAT = total × 7 ÷ 107, then the pre-VAT price = total − VAT. For example, at a 1,070 THB total, VAT = 1,070 × 7 ÷ 107 = 70 THB, so the pre-VAT price is 1,000 THB.
Why did the customer pay 1,070 THB when the item is priced at 1,000 THB?
Because 1,000 THB is the pre-VAT price. Adding 7% VAT (70 THB) makes the VAT-inclusive total you charge the customer 1,070 THB.
Can I use this result directly on a tax invoice?
It works as a basic reference figure, but issuing a real tax invoice requires the full document format under Section 86/4, and the figures should be checked with an accountant before issuing the actual document.
Does the 7% rate apply in every case?
7% is the current standard VAT rate, but some goods or services may be VAT-exempt or have different conditions. If unsure about your own product type, check with the Revenue Department or an accountant.
